EPODE in France - Epode in France
The model consists of concrete initiatives, at both national and local levels, that foster better and more balanced eating habits and greater physical activity in everyday life.
The EPODE methodology enables micro-changes within the ecological niche of children and their families, and of new educational schemes mobilizing local stakeholders (see figure 1 below) within their daily activities. Families and individuals are thus encouraged to adopt healthier lifestyles in a sustainable way.

In each community, activities are coordinated by a local project manager, nominated by the mayor or other local leader. They are delivered under the guidance of a social marketing team with the expertise of an independent scientific committee at national level. Endorsement from the different ministries as well as support from public and private partners is key (see figure below).

The objective of the EPODE initiative is to contribute to the reduction of the prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity using a methodology that places primary prevention at the heart of each town and city's networks.
In EPODE French pilot cities (Westley, 2007) , success to date is measured by a large field mobilization and the encouraging improvements in the body mass index (BMI) of children.
